Evaluation question 6
What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
In the process of producing our film I have used many technologies, some of which I had previously used and some which were completely new to me.
Firstly, the use of google blogger was a new platform of sharing group work for me. I had never used blogger before but soon got used to the idea of digitally producing work and sharing it over our blog rather than doing it manually. I used several different pieces of software to produce some of my work including Power Point, Microsoft Word and Prezi which I used on my laptop. Prezi was a new piece of software I had never used previously which I found very useful due to its good layout which is easy to navigate around and produce entertaining slides.
During the actual shooting of our film, as well as our questionnaire and preliminary exercise, we used a DV camera as these were the cameras provided to us from college. I had used other similar cameras before at home so easily got to grips with the handling and function of the camera. We used this camera with a tripod for all of the shots in our film as there was no need for a hand held shot in any of our scenes. The DV camera was used successfully and gave me better experience with a camera and has made me feel more confident in using one in the future.
Furthermore, we used Final Cut Express to edit our film, questionnaire and preliminary exercise together. I had never used the software before so it was a new experience for me as well as every other member of my group, but we soon learned how to use the software to edit the shots we had took with the DV camera and to firstly put them in chronological order. Once we accomplished this task we used the software to add effects to our shots such as the title sequence 'RUNNER' which appears in the back drop of the shot. Once we gained more confidence using the software to edit we synchronized music to our shots and edited them again more effectively with the use of match on actions and parallel editing in our attacking scene for example, to speed up the pace of the action and make it more entertaining for viewers with a tense build up through the use of the parallel edits.

How did you attract/address your audience?
When we were in the pre-production and planning stage of our film, we were contemplating which market to aim our film at depending on the narrative of our film and some of the features we would display in it. Once many ideas had been generated through the group we decided to base our film around one particular idea. We outlined numerous features which our crime thriller film would have in it, such as violence, scenes involving drugs or possibly drug taking and strong language as these are some conventions of crime thrillers. Once this was established we looked at what age certificate would be age appropriate for our film according to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). We decided that an age certificate of 15 or above would be suitable for our film as we thought that our target audience would be males aged 15-24 as the nature of the film is more likely to appeal to that specific age group. However, we didn't want to dismiss females from our target audience so set then firmly on any one aged 15-24. Also, we thought that an age rating of 15 would be the most beneficial for the success of the film as more people would have easier access to watch the film if the age rating is at 15 as oppose to 18, which would narrow our target audience and make it considerably smaller. The more people who would have access to the film the better, as this way more people would be made aware of the film and possibly recommended to watch it by friends and peers through word of mouth, which all contributes to the possible success of the film.

After this in the pre-production phase of our film, we did more planning and research to address our audience by distributing several questionnaires to members of the public around Barnsley, to see if our film idea highlighted any major problems or concerns when presented to a potential viewer. The questionnaire results showed no obvious major issues regarding our film idea and the majority of candidates said that our film would relate to 'teenagers'.
When plotting the first two minutes of our film we decided to have an attack scene where two opposing gang members would have some sort of violent encounter. Initially, we were going to use a knife as a key element of this scene but were unable to obtain a knife prop so incorporated the use of a dumb gun that was available to us, so the element of severe violence was still there. We decided to use the element of violence in the first scene as this would engage our audience and draw them in making them want to watch on and see what happens between the two oppositions and the police force, after the enigma of a random 'set up' attack is established in the very first scene.
In our audience feed back results, a few people commented on the fact that the violence we used in the opening scene engaged them into watching the rest of the clip to see if they would be made aware of why the attack took place and who the characters involved were. A few people commented also on the name of our film 'runner', which has an ambiguous feel to it and can be interpreted in different ways. The film could be about someone who runs a large drug circle or someone or even the police officer who runs an investigation trying to catch the criminals. The ambiguity of our title would attract in our audience as they will be unaware about what the film is about so may watch the opening scenes due to the title alone.

Looking back at your preliminary exercise, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product.
I learned that the complexity of your editing has a massive affect on the overall outcome of your film, if you use simple editing it wont be as effective as more complex. In our preliminary exercise we used simple edits and rules such as shot-reverse-shot, the 180 degree line and match on action. Although this helped us keep continuity it didn't look like it had been edited professionally unlike the full product, in which we used fades, and parallel editing which made a massive difference to the flow of the film and made it look professional. It also helped to create a tense build up affect which was vital to get the overall message of the film.
Another thing I learned is the affect of the acting, in the preliminary exercise we didn't spend much time working on the costume and acting so it was hard to understand what the exercise was about and it didn't have the right affects. However in the full product we had lots of time to make sure the costume and acting was effective, which improved the film massively. It helped the product to give off the correct affect and people could understand it effectively meaning it was better.
Also the sound had a major affect, in the preliminary exercise the only sound used was diagetic dialogue meaning that there was no background music or any affect. This made it weird to watch and broke continuity as it was abnormally quiet at times. On the other hand in the full product as well as diagetic dialogue we also added some non diagetic music on to the beginning of it and the title sequence which had a positive affect. It worked well as build up music and created tension which will get the audience on their feet wondering what will happen next. Also the music made it seem more normal and kept continuity.

Before I made this product I had never used this piece of software, however I can now insert, cut, add effects, add non diagetic sounds, insert text and export. These are all very use full skills and can be repeated to make other films such as a sequel to our product.
We also used Apple macs throughout the course. Before this project I hadn't used an apple mac and struggled to do simple tasks such as cut and pasting, or even finding applications. However Apple macs can be very effective and have many shortcuts for more advanced users so by using them over the creation of the product I have learned vital skills that can help me do everyday things effectively such as opening the programs needed to make our product.

Our target audience was people aged 15-24 and aimed towards males however also trying to attract females as well. One way we found this was by taking a sample of people to read our storyline and asking them who they thought the film was aimed at. Most of them guessed our target audience correctly suggesting that we had chosen a correct target audience.
Also another way we address our target audience was by making associations between their everyday lives and our film, for example in the scene with the attack we made sure that we used a gun because teenagers are well known for playing first person shooter games such as Call of Duty. We did this because teenagers are more likely to enjoy the film if it has similarities to their everyday lives and hobbies. Another example of this is we used costume and characters that can relate to our target audience, we did this with characters Lewis Lock and Kurtis, they are both aged 18 and wear clothing that many teens would wear. This helped our audience to relate to the characters meaning they are more likely to enjoy it.

We also made sure that we would adapt our marketing to our target audience for example using social networks which are mainly used by teenagers. This means that more of our target audience are likely to see it and be attracted to it. Also it will increase the amount of word of mouth, if people are seeing advertisement for our film on social media then they are likely to post about it on social media. The more people that post about it the more people will see it.
