Evaluation question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Many crime thriller films, such as Adulthood, Shifty and Manors, all successful films similar to ours are often focused on the criminals rather than the police force. However, our film is orientated around the police and Bloor's Struggle for his identity with the risk of losing his job and also the sanctuary of the town where he operates. This challenges the typical conventions which real media products have created such as the above listed films. By showing the opposite side of the story, we could possibly open up the target audience by making our film sound more appealing for a vaster amount of people.

Furthermore, many crime thrillers show how the embedded intelligence of the criminals helps them to out wit the police so they can always stay a step ahead of the game. However, our film again challenges this convention of crime thrillers as it does have a psychological edge to the narrative of the film, but shows this element from the perspective of DCI Bloor and how he conquers the case to bring the criminals to justice and restore his reputation as a hero among the police.

Although our film does challenge some crime thriller conventions it does yet again satisfy and complement many other conventions at the same tine. For example, it is a standered crime thriller convention for there to be a shortage of violence (excluding mafia based films), where characters don't often interact in a violent way in order to maintain tension within the narrative, so that the drama which is built up throughout the film can culminate at the end of the where there is an abundance of violence and outbreak.

Also, lots of tense and noticeable non-diabetic sounds such as up beat loud music is often used to add to the ethos of the film highlighting the atmospheric emotion and feel in the film. Often in crime thrillers similar to ours, tense music is used to give off the impression that something bad is going to happen, just like we used in the alley scene before one of the drug runners is mugged by another. This created the emotion we were hoping to create by complementing the shots making a feeling of danger apparent to the audience.
